16 quick and easy Halloween recipes to have a scary time cooking with kids

Desserts

If Halloween has become enormously popular in Spain in just a decade, it is not only because of the enormous cultural influence of the United States, but also because of how attractive this party is for children.

In front of our Catholic All Saints Day, Anglo-Saxon Halloween –which, in reality, shares the same Celtic origin– has an enormous festive weight, and is full of customs where children are the protagonists: the famous trick or treat, to the decoration of pumpkins or costumes. And also the kitchen.

The Halloween recipe book is full of simple preparations, very fun to make with the little ones in the house. Although most require adult supervision, they do not have great difficulties.

The older ones will be able to make the recipes almost without help and the little ones will surely enjoy participating in some of the processes. What is certain is that everyone will have a great time.

1. Bleeding amputated fingers

  • Ingredients: A package of frankfurters, rolled almonds, ketchup, or a similar tomato sauce

  • Preparation: Cut one of the ends of each sausage, ensuring that the cut is irregular. Make a light cut on the tip that we have not separated, where the nail should go. Make other cuts along the body of each sausage, imitating the lines of the fingers. Place an almond like a fingernail on each end and brush each cut end of the sausages with a little ketchup.

2. Monster eggs

  • Ingredients: 4 eggs, 1 avocado, 5 g of mayonnaise, 4 olives, salt, ground black pepper, red edible ink marker, green food coloring (optional).

  • Preparation: Fill a small saucepan with water and bring it to a boil. Add a dash of vinegar and a pinch of salt and carefully insert the eggs. We cook them for 12 minutes. After this time, we remove the eggs from the water and cool them. As soon as they have tempered, we peel them being careful not to spoil the white because it would be ugly in appearance and would spoil the aesthetics of the pumpkin eggs. We cut the eggs in half and remove the yolks. We put them in a deep bowl and crush them together with the mayonnaise and the avocado meat. If we want to add a more pronounced green color, we use a pinch of green food coloring. If not, we leave the mixture as is. Salt and pepper and put in a pastry bag. We cut the olives into four discs each. We also slice the bottom of each egg half to leave the base smooth and prevent them from moving when serving. We cut each of these pieces into two circles, with the help of a round nozzle, and fill the inside of the olive discs with them. We paint the eggs with the edible ink marker, imitating veins (sure, sure, that you do this better than me). Fill the hollow of each egg with the yolk and avocado mixture, place the eyes on the oak and ready to serve.

3. Ghost cupcakes

  • Ingredients: 6 muffins, white fondant, icing sugar, caramel eyes, a rolling pin.

  • Preparation: You can make the homemade muffins or, much easier, buy some that are round. To make the sheets, we use white fondant, which is manageable like plasticine and can already be found in the cake decorating area in all supermarkets. We will also use, to make the eyes, caramel eyes or white candy balls to which we will paint a black dot. With the help of the children, we roll out a small portion of fondant by pressing with a rolling pin. Little ones love this work. To prevent the fondant from sticking to the countertop or the roller itself, we can sprinkle both surfaces with icing sugar. Then we cover each cupcake with a portion of the stretched fondant and arrange it giving it a ghost shape. How are we going to spend it seeing their faces. Finally, we place our eyes in their place, and if we want, we leave some of the ghosts a little squint, that to the taste of the kings of the house.

Trim the mouths with a good sharp knife from black olives. Cut small circles from the cheese slice, with a mini cutter if we had a round nozzle, or by hand with a knife. When the mixture is about to boil, add the chocolate, previously chopped, and remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir well with a spoon, until the chocolate is completely melted. We let this cream rest until it is totally cold. We mount the whites to the stiffness and mix them with the previous cream, making enveloping movements with the help of a spatula to prevent the whites from falling. We divide the mousse into six individual glasses and let it rest in the fridge for a minimum of four hours or until it is completely set. Once the time has passed, just before serving, we crush the chocolate cookies and sprinkle them on top of each mousse. Finally, we decorate each cup with the jelly beans.

  • Preparation: Wash and dry the chives well, gently. Select the freshest, most flexible and damage-free pieces. Also select the sticks that remain whole and have not been broken in the bag. Cut each cylinder or stick of cheese into 2-3 pieces, about 4-5 cm long. With a sharp, fine-pointed knife, make several longitudinal cuts in one of the bases of each cylinder, without going all the way to the other end. Cut as many times as possible to remove the "bristles" from the broom. Make a small cut in the upper end to insert a salty stick, gently so as not to break it. Tie a chives around the broom, cutting off any excess ends. Repeat with the rest of the cheese.
