Burgos and Ciudad Real, finalists of the second edition of the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy
Just a few months ago my colleague Pakus informed us of the announcement of the second edition of the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy, and now we know which have been the two cities that have passed to the final phase to win the distinctive, Burgos and Real city.
On September 21, the deadline for the submission of candidatures was closed, which the Selection Committee has studied and assessed according to the requirements set out in the bases of this contest. Ciudad Real thus manages to become a finalist after its participation last year, while Burgos is presented in this edition for the first time.
According to reports from the organization of the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy, finally only five provincial capitals submitted candidacies, three of them being rejected for various reasons that clashed with the criteria established by the committee, although their names have not transpired.
The reduced number of applications is striking, since as a result of the good reception of the first edition and the success that it has meant for the current winner, La Rioja - Logroño, a greater participation was expected. Even some cities that participated in the first edition, such as Valladolid, refused to repeat this year because they found changes in the requirements to present a candidacy.
In any case, the final winner will be chosen at the end of the year. Both Burgos and Valladolid Ciudad Real are two cities with a great gastronomic culture that have shown interest in promoting it as an economic, tourist and social point of reference. By appointing the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy, it is intended to contribute to the dissemination and consolidation of local gastronomy and products, undoubtedly fundamental support in times of difficulties such as the one we are going through today.
