Café Boulevard de Bilbao closes
Today I woke up to the news that the Café Boulevard de Bilbao will close at the end of October, because the owners of the property where the café is located no longer want to renew the lease to give the building other uses.
Café Boulevard was opened in 1871, so this fact marks the end of 135 years of history. It is the oldest café in Bilbao and is decorated in an "art deco" style, which includes pieces acquired at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1926.
In addition to its decoration and its history, Café Boulevard has also always stood out for holding events related to culture, such as poetic gatherings. This café has been the center of Bilbao's social life for more than a century. I was precisely having a coffee there on Saturday and I reread Miguel de Unamuno's phrase that is printed on the paper napkins: "and there, on the Boulevard, people who meet because they meet, and others who do not meet because they meet'.
