How to tackle the drop in wine consumption?
According to statistics, the consumption of wine drops notably, a fact that is not overlooked by all those involved in the world of wine. For this reason, MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) has met with winegrowers, winery associations and hoteliers to discuss the problem, how to tackle the drop in wine consumption in Spain and find a viable solution.
At the moment, the initial solution adopted has been to create working groups to analyze the situation, since it is necessary to have exhaustive knowledge of the problem to give it the appropriate solution.
The concern within the oenological world is palpable, in the first semester of this year 2006 there has already been a 3.5% decrease in relation to the same period corresponding to 2005 and according to the data they provide, the loss is recorded in millions of liters. In the hospitality industry, the losses are also very noticeable and we wonder what they expected? On many occasions, the decrease in wine consumption in restaurants is due to the high profit margin applied to bottles, we have come to see in sometimes up to 300% on the purchase value of the wine, that's too much. They really hurt themselves for several reasons, the wine sells less, they run the risk of spoiling and also contribute to the fact that renowned and quality wines do not leave their cellars.
We believe that the formula to be adopted will be different in each area. A strategy that benefits everyone will be a bit difficult to achieve, but hey, the foundations are in place, the working groups will find the real problems and possible combined solutions.
What we do not understand is why they have waited so long to find a solution, if they have been observing this decline for a long time, did they think it was temporary? Consumers want quality and an appropriate price from the point of origin, which are the strains, to the bottle located in the restaurant or supermarket, the many percentages that are applied must be reduced.
It is not surprising that many foreign wines are more competitive, you just have to check the prices, to see if in the end the same thing will happen to the Spanish wine as to the Australian.
