How to make pulled pork with (and without) Crock Pot, a meat recipe that melts in your mouth

It had been a long time since I had my eye on pulled pork and, although it can be made in a traditional oven, it was not until Crock Pot entered my kitchen that I launched into it. The truth is that this machine is not necessary, although the result is very good because the low temperature at which it is cooked and the steam that is generated inside create the perfect environment.

One of the biggest advantages of preparing pulled pork is how much the pork shoulder gives. Many servings come out of a single piece and can be used in many ways: in quesadillas, as a filling for pitta bread, in sandwiches, to enrich soups, etc. It is delicious, it is very simple to prepare and does not require any effort. Do you need more reasons to do it?

How to make pulled pork

Difficulty: easy
  • Total time 12 h 15 m
  • Elaboration 15 m
  • Cooking 12 h

For the preparation of this recipe it is necessary that the pork shoulder is flanged, especially if it has been boned, so that the meat is well collected again and does not lose shape during cooking. We can ask our butcher to put it in a mesh or to tie it ourselves with twine thread.

We prepare the mixture of spices with which we are going to cover it. To do this, in a deep container, mix the salt, brown sugar, sweet paprika, ground dry chili, ground black pepper, mustard seeds (failing that we can use a tablespoon of Dijon mustard), garlic in polo, Worcester sauce and 100 ml of apple cider vinegar. Mix well.

Peel and cut the onions into eight pieces and place them on the base of the Crock Pot, water with the coca cola. We smear the pork with the spice mixture, using our hands and making sure to cover it well on all sides until we are done with it. We place it on the onion and cover. We program at low temperature for 12 hours.

At the end of this time, we turn off the Crock Pot and let the pig warm inside before removing and fraying it. We crush the sauce and go through a strainer. Heat it over low heat and remove the excess fat. Season to taste and adjust the thickness, either reducing the sauce for a time or with cornstarch.

If we want to make the pulled pork in a traditional oven, we need to heat it to 160ºC and use a saucepan with a lid suitable for the oven (cast iron ones are perfect because they distribute the heat very well). The baking time is reduced to six hours, it is advisable to check the point of the meat and see if it frays easily before removing it from the oven.

With which to accompany the pulled pork

When it comes to consuming pulled pork, it is advisable to mix it with a little of its sauce to give it a touch of flavor and juiciness. We can serve it as the main element of the dish, with a garnish of rice, pasta, vegetables, salad or more. Although it is also delicious as a filling for sandwiches, tacos, wheat tortillas and accompanied by chopped fruits and vegetables.
