Daimiel, town of witches and tapas
Daimiel is a city municipality in the province of Ciudad Real and is known for three main reasons, its wines, its Las Tablas de Daimiel national park and its Bruges. History tells us that throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, the La Mancha town of Daimiel became the epicenter of sinister processes related to witchcraft. And since then, the nickname of "the town of witches" was coined for this population.
Using the aforementioned nickname, the Tablas de Daimiel tourist association has organized the 1st weekend of Daimiel, town of witches, for the 17th and 18th of November. The idea consists of making a gastronomic route through the city through different establishments in which tapas will be served at popular prices, in an attempt to encourage tourism and publicize its gastronomy.
The themed tapas are inspired by the myths and legends of the witches in Daimiel and in the cuisine of the 16th and 17th centuries. You can taste, for example, the deer ragout casserole with pumpkin, based on deer meat, pumpkin, rosemary and fruits of the earth or one with the curious name of frog eye, bat patagio and lizard marrow based of roasted spinach, mushrooms and peppers.
But the weekend not only offers a gastronomic offer but also, presentations open to the public at the Water Center, one on the medicinal use of Guadiana plants, by Alonso Verde López, from the Ethnobotany unit of the Botanical Garden of Castilla - La Mancha, and another on the tradition of witches and sorceresses in Daimiel, which will be given by Javier Pérez Campos, editor of the television program Cuarto Milenio. Of course it all ends with a night and dramatized visit to Las Tablas.
The initiative and the idea seem fabulous to me, everything that is an attempt to promote and activate tourism has my support without a doubt. In addition, I grew up in those lands of La Mancha and I cannot avoid talking about what happens there whenever I can. If you dare to spend a weekend of witches, Daimiel is your place and I hope you enjoy it.
