Specific denomination Viños da Terra Ribeiras do Barbanza Iria
The artisanal wineries have gotten tired of being the poor brother and after an initiative that was born 4 years ago by the winegrowers associations Arousa Norte, Ribeira de Arousa and Catoira, they have finally managed to get the Ministry of Rural Affairs to grant them its wines the qualification of specific Denomination Viños da Terra Ribeiras do Barbanza-Iria.The demanding regulations have been drawn up by the winegrowers themselves who qualify it at the level of the Denomination of Origin. They will be made in artisan wineries but with the most advanced technology and their production will be a maximum of ten thousand kilograms per hectare in the case of white varieties, and eight thousand, in the case of red varieties.
Initially, the product will be made in seven artisanal wineries in Arousa north and south and the producers of this initiative will be those from the municipalities of Ribeira, Rianxo, A Pobra, Boiro, Porto do Son, Lousame, Catoira, Valga, Pontecesures and Dodro. Its claim is not to compete with the great D.O. and their main market will be local, although they do not rule out being able to send some of their bottles to the most specialized stores, where connoisseurs and different wine seekers can find these products.
These wines will see the light in 2007 with a vintage that will put some 100,000 bottles on the market. As one of its main promoters, Francisco Crusat, says, the road has only just begun but this name has been a very important step. From here we want to congratulate you for the initiative that all good wine lovers will benefit from, as we will be able to have access to many excellent wines that, as we belong to such local areas, we would not have access.
