Mexican chili peppers from 1,500 years ago discovered
At the beginning of the year we were aware of the discovery in Ecuador of chili or chili beans dating back about 6,000 years ago, which showed us that this ingredient was used much earlier than previously thought. The scholars of ancestral gastronomy find in these discoveries a new world of research to which today we add another, although with less antiquity.
On this occasion it refers to Mexican gastronomy, since traces of ten peppers have been found in two archaeological sites in the Oaxaca valley, in the Guila Naquitz and Silvia caves near the city of Milta. Linda Perry, an archaeologist at the National Museum of National History in Washington and the main author of this work published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, assures that the find confirms the sophistication of agriculture and cooking 1,500 years ago. that they give to the peppers found.
What they have not described yet is whether the varieties of peppers are similar to those used today, but they highlight that the culinary use was for both dried and fresh peppers.
