With spring comes the flowers, allergies, weather changes and one of the things that I look forward to every year, with renewed longing: strawberries. From their box in the greengrocer they enchant me with that beautiful red color and when I smell them, I have no choice but to carry at least one kilo.

But today I wanted to talk about the strawberry, its origins and properties. And of course its uses in the kitchen, since it is no longer a typical dessert ingredient to be present in any dish.

Strawberry season

From March to July they brighten up greengrocers with their bright red or orange color, depending on the variety. Strawberries are a great source of minerals, folic acid, vitamins like E and C; in fact it is estimated that in 100 grams of strawberries are 60 milligrams of said vitamin.

Even strawberries are very good for losing weight, as Vitónica colleagues tell us. It has very few sugars and its main component is water, so it has hardly any calories, so it becomes an ideal ally for diets. Obviously, cream and condensed milk are banished.

They also have a high diuretic power that helps eliminate toxins and fluids, thus ending the dreaded retention. Fiber is also present in this fruit and helps regulate intestinal transit.

Strawberry, thanks to its beautiful hue, its seductive scent and its revitalizing properties, is present in a multitude of cosmetic products, either as a component or as an aroma, such as shampoos, perfumes or body creams.

The uses of strawberry in the kitchen

In the kitchen, the strawberry is present in desserts such as slushies, smoothies, jellies, jams or it is even eaten alone.

In recent years, strawberry has become a common ingredient in jellies, side dishes, salads, sauces, and vinaigrettes.

When buying them, since it is a very delicate fruit, we must ensure that they are whole, without taps or bruises and that the leaves are green. So that they preserve all their properties and do not spoil in a short time, we must quickly store it in the fridge.

Before consumption or before using them for cooking, the green part should be removed and washed thoroughly.
