The story of Ceferino Carrión is well known, a man from Santander who, at the end of the 1940s, set off as a stowaway to New York to work as a dishwasher for $ 4 a day.

From there to Hollywood; the American army; James Dean; La Scala and Beverly Hills.

Jean León is born.

La Scala becomes the most glamorous restaurant in Hollywood and Jean León the fashionable restaurateur. Actors, actresses, politicians, businessmen, fill the premises night after night.

They say that Jean León used to personally choose the wine that he offered to his guests at the countless banquets, lunches and dinners he organized. But he couldn't find the wine that was really to his liking, so he decided to make his own wine.

Thus begins his second great adventure: the Jean León Winery.

One hundred and fifty hectares of the best lands in the heart of the Penedès. Clay-calcareous soil, slightly sloping, with southern exposure. There, Jean León plants the best Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay clones from the most famous wineries in Bordeaux and Burgundy.

And here begins the work of another man, the true prop of the bogeda and creator of the Jean León wines: Jaume Rovira, his winemaker.

Rovira is the one who creates this Jean León Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that is made with the vineyards of the "Le Havre" estate of about 30 hectares of predisposed land planted with old Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines. One of the oldest in the peninsula, with permission from Torres and Riscal.

And we have in front of us a bottle of its 2001 vintage. An excellent vintage that shows us with its still fresh and appetizing wines. Cherry red with the rim still very vivid. Aromas on the nose of blueberries and black plums, pepper and green coffee. Only a vague, fully integrated memory remains of its 18 months in oak. As it should be. On the palate, round, with just the right acidity provided by the Cabernet Franc and with the tame but lively, sharp and dry tannins. A serious, elegant, even austere wine, but certainly one of the best cabernets I have tasted lately.
