Among German Christmas sweets, the so-called Makronen, a term that is related to the macaron French and with which it shares some similarity. But the good thing about the German version is that it is much easier to prepare and admits various variations that are not complicated. Recipes like these Kokosmakronen or balls of coconut, marzipan and chocolate are ideal for Christmas.

The base is egg white beaten with sugar and mixed with crushed or ground nuts. Almond, hazelnut and walnut are typical, but dried fruits can also be added or filled with jam or candied fruits. Sometimes they are baked on wafers and on other occasions they are completely covered in chocolate, although I like to just give them a touch so that it does not take the center off the rest of the dough.

  • Sugar 180 g
  • Salt 2 g
  • Lemon 1
  • Vanilla 2 ml
  • grated coconut 250 g
  • Marzipan or almond paste 100 g
  • Dark chocolate 60 g

How to make Kokosmakronen or Coconut Marzipan Chocolate Balls

Preheat the oven to 160ºC and prepare a tray with parchment paper or a silicone sheet. Arrange the egg whites in a deep bowl and add the pinch of salt. Beat with a whisk until you get them to stiffen. Add the sugar and continue beating until it has almost dissolved.

Grate the half lemon and squeeze the juice. Add it to the dough together with the vanilla and coconut, and mix lightly. Grate the marzipan or almond paste dough with a coarse grater and incorporate it. Mix everything until you have a homogeneous mass, with which to form balls.

Take portions of approximately the same size, and distribute them on the tray. It is not necessary to separate them much. Bake for about 15-18 minutes, until they start to brown. Wait a little out of the oven and let it cool completely on a rack.

Melt the dark chocolate and transfer to a pastry bag. Decorate the coconut balls when they are cold, adding the chocolate to taste. Allow to dry completely before storing in an airtight container.

Kokosmakronen or Coconut Marzipan Chocolate Balls are a delicious sweet snack to serve with coffee or after-dinner liquor at Christmas. They can be placed in paper or aluminum capsules, truffle or chocolate type, or stored in bags or small boxes to give as jpgts. They hold up very well for a couple of weeks, even longer.
