Side. Rueda cannot accept reds or rosés

The Supreme Court has confirmed the ruling handed down on June 17, 2003 by the Superior Court of Justice of Castilla y León, which annulled the articles of the D.O. Rueda and its Regulatory Council that allowed the production and sale of red and rosé wines with the same back label that until now had only protected its white wines.

Side. has suffered a severe blow, since since 2002 they were promoting the production of reds and rosés, but the TSJ of Castilla y León affirms that these are not a product worthy of the protection of the D.O. Rueda, because it does not meet the qualities and differential characteristics that a D.O. Already in 1999 they were denied due to the improvable quality of the wines.

The Minister of Agriculture José Valín, after the first sentence of the TSJ, promoted the planting of vineyards and investment in the wineries, guaranteeing that they were not in danger, which has caused great losses to the winemakers. But it seems that there may be a loophole, since these wines have been sold as local wines for five years and could be declared as quality wines with a geographical indication, to later achieve the Denomination of Origin. They will propose a modification of the Vine and Wine Law in order to ensure that reds and rosés are protected by the D.O. Rueda, in addition to studying the losses of the winemakers to compensate them.

It is a somewhat complicated subject in which, without a doubt, politics intervenes. We would like to know your opinion. Do you think that red and rosé wines should be protected by the D.O.? After the success of the whites they want to expand the business with other wines? Should Valín resign?
