La Garoinada 2009 in Palafrugell

One more year around this time, well into winter, when the temperature of the sea water reaches its lowest levels, the time comes when the sea urchins reach their fullness.

And with them comes the Garoinada 2009 in Palafrugell (Girona).

True, as of Saturday, January 16 - and until March 15 -, you will be able to taste this gastronomic specialty in the restaurants in the area that participate in the campaign.

The “garoina” or “garota” is what the sea urchin is called in the area.

And the Garoinada is, neither more nor less, than the tasting of these precious echinoids: a very typical gastronomic practice of the seafaring towns of Empordà.

But man does not live on hedgehogs only. La Garoinada consists of a menu with the essential hedgehogs for starters - raw and with a bit of bread and butter - plus a second dish that may vary depending on the restaurant you choose, but which is almost always a seafood dish: a "Suquet de peix", a black rice, cod ...
