Homemade custard recipe, the homemade dessert of a lifetime that will never go out of style

My mother was never a great confectioner, but I remember well the emotion that entered the smallest of the house when she dared to treat us to one of her desserts. In its traditional repertoire its delicious custard has always shone, whose simple aroma fills me with memories of childhood. Maybe that's why I hadn't been encouraged until recently to prepare my own homemade custard, but the truth is that they are so easy, and they are so rich, that it is worth recovering typical recipes like this one.

The elaboration is very basic and can be adapted to the taste of each one, because like all traditional recipes in each house they are prepared with a different touch. With more sugar, regardless of cinnamon or vanilla, more or less thick ... If you have never made custard it is best to try a base recipe and try your own modifications from then on.

  • Cinnamon stick 1
  • Small or medium vanilla bean 1

Put the milk in a saucepan with the cinnamon stick, the vanilla pod that we will have opened with a knife and the lemon rind - just the yellow part. Heat, bring to a boil and remove from heat. Let infuse 15-20 minutes and strain.

Arrange the egg yolks with the sugar in a bowl and beat with some rods. Add the cornstarch, beat well and gradually add the milk, mixing with the rods to leave a homogeneous texture.

Heat a container in a bain-marie and pour the preparation. Heat without bringing the water to a boil, stirring constantly with the rods, so that it does not stick. Continue cooking for about 10 minutes or more, until it thickens. Remember that when hot, the mixture will always be more liquid than when it cools.

Fill the containers that we like the most and let them warm a little. Carefully place a Maria cookie on top of each serving and take to the fridge. Let cool completely for a few hours before serving.

What to accompany the custard

Homemade custard is a delicious classic dessert with which to conclude a meal that few can resist. We can also serve them at snack time, with a little extra ground cinnamon, if desired. They do not need anything else to accompany them, although I like to take them with a cup of coffee only next to them.
