Countries outside the European Union make it difficult to import olive oil

If a few days ago we heard the news that Argentina prohibited the entry of ham from other countries, now it seems that there is another key product of our economy that is going to have difficulties when it comes to exporting. It has recently been known that some countries outside the European Union have announced measures to make it difficult to import olive oil.

These include Brazil, the United States and Australia, large nations that in recent years had become strong importers of various products, including olive oil. The current economic situation, together with the increase in potential consumers, have led them to propose strategies that promote local production by hindering imports.

Among these difficulties is the increase in tariffs and customs fees and the tightening of controls that would lead to long delays in entries, with the requirement of analysis that would increase costs. Therefore, the arrival of foreign production is not radically prohibited, but an attempt is thus made to discourage the exporter, leaving him at a clear disadvantage compared to local producers.

Spain is currently at the fore in number of olive oil exports, with 828.4 tons of product sold during the 2010/2011 season. The data for this year indicate that the figures do not stop improving, with growth of + 3% recorded last March compared to the previous season. Much of it is exported to Italy, but there the oil is processed to be sold under Italian brands, many of which are re-imported.

We will have to wait a few months to see what the real magnitude of the measures that have been announced is, and thus know how it will affect the Spanish oil market. It must be understood that these countries only seek to protect and stimulate their local products, but we hope that it does not imply negative effects on Spanish production.
