Why Red Wine Causes Drowsiness

Desserts

Especially red wine causes drowsiness in a large number of people, this is due to the large amounts of melatonin (sleep regulating hormone) contained in the grapes of some varieties such as Merlot or Cabernet Savignon.

Until recently, science explained that melatonin was produced exclusively in the body of mammals, but recent research has found that some plants also make it.

The Italian scientists who conducted the research already have their detractors, Richard Wurtman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, warns that possibly Italian scientists have not actually found melatonin, but that it is another very similar substance.

For now, the study will be published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, since so far it is the first explanation given to the sleepiness that red wine produces in some people.
